Summary of Show:

Today’s guest, Tuan Nguyen, has been to prison three times, but on that third time he figured something out. He talks about how he snuck some things into prison that transformed his thinking, and his life. Then just a few months after he got out he was on a stage in front of 3000 people at a John Maxwell Conference.

Tuan will come at you hard in three areas. He’ll jab you with motivation, left hook you with information, then upper cut you with inspiration and his story will leave you walking away a better person. He’s the co-founder of Movement 21 Empowerment, He’s a certified coach, speaker and trainer as well as trainer for John Maxwell’s non-profit organization, EQUIP. We know a lot of the same people and it’s an honor to call him friend and have him on the show.

EP 009 "Cheeseburgers for Marriage" Reggie and Michelle Hicks Story

Summary of Show:

Today’s guests is the Hick’s family, Reggie who served 30 years for murder, his wife Michelle, Reggie’s dad Clark, and Reggie’s step mom Deborah. They are the most incredible family I know. They’ve been through so much including Reggie losing his biological mom just weeks before he was released. Reggie and Michelle did something that I always suggest AGAINST, but they have made it happen, through thick and thin, and have made it 12 plus years. Reggie got to hit against Andy Pettite in college.that’s cool if you’re a baseball fan.

EP 007 Bryan Kelley PEP- Life Sentence to CEO

Summary of Show:

If you take away all the programs in Texas Department of Criminal Justice, that are volunteer based, you find any rehabilitative elements  to our prison system. In fact, our system can sometimes hinder the really good programs from having a lasting impact. 

But if you look real closely you can find some really awesome ones. Prison Entrepreneurship Program is one of these programs. It takes inmates through some character, leadership, and businesses principles that when applied, can assure success. 

Bryan is a graduate of the program and now the CEO. His story will touch you as he shares how he almost went off the grid when his lawyer told him to man up.

EP 006 "ORDER IN THE COURT" DWI Court with Judge Hamilton

“ORDER IN THE COURT”

Today on Background Check we go to DWI court and appear before Judge Kathleen Hamilton. 

We ask her about her specialty courts she runs, Juvenile Drug Court, Veteran's Treatment Court, and DWI Court. She talks about the impact they have on the offender as well as the community as a whole. There was no DWI or specialty courts when I was in trouble with the law so this was all new to me.

As she walked through the programs with me I began to see that this part of our judicial system is an amazing asset. If we had more programs like this implemented across the board, we’d send less people to prison. And the cost of these programs are way less than the cost of keeping someone in prison.

EP 002 CNN Top Ten Hero of the Year 2019, Richard Miles- Wrongfully Convicted

Richard was walking home one night when he was picked up by the police because he matched the description of a 6’1’ dark-skinned, black man. Richard is about 5’8” and light skinned. A witness was coerced into testifying that it was him and they sentenced him to 60 years in prison for murder and aggravated assault.

He spent 15 years of that before he was released, then exonerated. He went on to open Miles of Freedom where he helps people who have been impacted by incarceration get back on their feet. He also takes families in vans to see loved ones in prison, who otherwise couldn’t afford the expenses.

We talk about his story, his exoneration, the justice system and what’s wrong with it, and his nomination for CNN Top Ten Heroe of the Year for 2019.

Background Check Podcast is all about helping people with a past realize their future and have success, no matter what their background check reads.

We all make mistakes, some more than others (that's me), but we can all change and rise above our past. But in the process of bouncing back, there are obstacles in our way and the biggest one is the background check. Whether it's buying a home, working in a ministry, employment, renting an apartment, background checks are a part of our lives now. 

On the podcast I will give tips, tricks, suggestions, on how to navigate life with mark on your background. We will interview CEO's who run felon friendly businesses and have second chance programs. We will interview people who have successfully reentered society and are doing great. Wrongfully convicted people have a great story to tell and we'll hear from them as well. Parole lawyers, School Superintendents, Bankers, Reentry Programs, prison support programs, and much more. 

This first episode I just share a little of my story and talk about why I’m doing the podcast. I hope you enjoy the show.
