EP 18 "We Met in Prison" Dr. Veronica Tetterton and Dr. Karla Evans from Anticipate Joy

Summary of Show:

I sit down with Dr. Tetterton and Dr. Evans and talk mental health and prison. They both worked as counselors in the federal prison system and shed a lot of light on best practices. I was impressed with some of the things the federal system does that the state does not.

We talk about the effects of solitaire confinement on human beings. I enjoyed this interview so much. I could’ve talked with them for hours. They have such great insight. You’ll love this episode.

Memorable Quotes: “Going and shoving people into a building as sitting ducks is not changing our society” -Dr. Evans

“There are a lot of people in prison, there are a lot of people in the world, not even in prison, that aren’t able to get the resources and the services that they need.”- Dr Tetterton

EP 15 "My Heart is in Corrections" Rep. Carl Sherman Sr.

Summary of Show:

You know, each guest we have on Background Check is so special and important and I don’t take any of them for granted. It’s an honor to speak with them.

And today that honor is magnified because I get to talk with an elected official. But it’s not just any official. It’s my districts representative and he’s on the Corrections committee down in Austin. I met him at a leadership event after he was elected, and we’ve been friends ever since. C’mon, let’s do a background check on Rep. Carl Sherman Sr.

We dive into faith, politics, corrections, and we hold nothing back. We talk about some bills they are working on as well.

Memorable Quotes:

“In the end, it’s what you do for others, I believe, that will determine your outcome.”

“We are all going to live forever. We are essentially walking each other home. Where that home is will be determined by how we live.” - Rep. Carl Sherman Sr.
